Let's put this all in perspective...as if it was you or me...
A guy has been in a job 8 years and has been an exemplary employee and
lately a pretty good middle manager. Although he loves his firm, workmates
and clients, he knows he's worth a fair bit more than he's being paid and a
couple of head hunters from other firms have already approached him. At one
of the other firms, there's a peer who he'd really like to work with.
He has two projects on the go at the moment, plus he is representing the
company at an important international seminar for industry luminaries in the
middle of June.
His bosses are aware of the interest from other firms and are desperate to
keep him as they see him as the key to the future profitability and success
of the firm.
He wants to get these last two projects out of the way as he doesn't want
the distraction of whether he stays or not to cloud his decision making
during these two important projects.
But he has told his bosses that he will make the decision before the
international seminar as he doesn't think it is fair to his firm (which has
always been loyal to), if he allows all the other firms that will have
representatives at the same seminar to see his performance there and "bump
up" his contract price.
The deadline for the second project is 17th May, so there is still plenty of
time to make the all-important decision on his future before the
international seminar.
Although money is not the "be-all-and-end-all" for him, he thinks he should
still be paid what he's worth. More importantly, the second of the two
projects if it is successful, will take his firm to another level and make
them one of the Top 5 in his industry. This will clearly define for him if
the firm "matches his ambitions". The firm is also moving to a new state of
the art premises with this in mind, so have already demonstrated that they
are ready to move to a higher level of operation.
His bosses understand, but some of his favourite clients and shareholders
think he is a wanker because they don't want him to leave and/or don't know
the full story...
